Tips for the start of the design phase

General

-Ample lighting is one of the most important design features in a lower level. Consider adding multiple levels of light (recessed, sconces, accent lighting, and lamps) to serve all possible functions (general, task, ambient).

-Spreading out the features of the space creates more visual interest than placing everything on one or two walls.

-Drywall architectural features (art niches, vase niches, radius walls, ceiling detail) add value to your space without a lot of cost. Niches also serve as a great way to display collections.

Stairwell

-Opening up the base of the stairs, if possible, will unify all of the levels of your home.

-A single, architecturally dramatic path at the base of the stairs creates a more welcoming entrance into the space.

Wet Bar

-Keeping the wet bar central will maximize functionality and flow between theater and gaming areas.

-If you have a walkout basement, consider keeping the wet bar in close proximity to the door to create an indoor/outdoor entertaining space in the summer.

-Think ahead about appliances you would like to include, such as beverage center, wine cooler, microwave, icemaker, dishwasher, etc. This will ensure that the wet bar is large enough to accommodate all appliances plus ample storage.

Theater

-A better viewing environment is created if the TV area design is simple and clean. Too many horizontal lines around the TV can distract from the picture.

-Rope lighting in tray ceilings is a great way to add a theater-feel to your basement.

-Think ahead about screen size to that the seating is designed the correct distance away.

-Many options exist for theater equipment and speaker systems. It is never to early to start looking at the options.
