An Introduction to Green Remodeling

Green

Many people think that green remodeling or building means installing the latest high-tech products like solar panels and rainwater collection systems, but it can have just as much to do with the much smaller aspects of the project.

If your goal is an energy efficient house, focus first on the smaller items by choosing the greenest versions of the things you absolutely must have in your project: appliances, water heaters, insulation, windows, caulking, weatherstripping, fixtures, etc.  If you want to take it further consider solar technology, sustainable harvested woods, reclaimed lumber, salvaged plumbing and lighting fixtures.

The first step towards energy efficiency is understanding energy use in your own home.

  1. Outlets - Unplug anything that doesn't need to be plugged in, like small appliance, game consoles, TVs, etc.
  2. Lighting - Changing light bulbs out to Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs(CFLs).  CFLs are well known for energy savings because they require 75% less energy than standard incandescents.  Plus they last much longer.
  3. Air Sealing  - Check caulking and weatherstripping around windows and doors to plug air leaks.
  4. Appliances - Install energy star appliances such as refrigerators, dishwashers, dehumidifiers, washer and dryers.
  5. Insulation - Check for proper insulation in attic's, walls and foundations.
  6. Mechanicals - Modern heating and cooling equipment offers increased efficiency and reduced energy costs for the homeowner and the environment.
  7. Windows & Doors - Replacing old windows and doors with new should provide superior energy efficiency and long warranties.
  8. Wind, Solar, Electric - Using any of these power sources will definitely get you closer to being "off the grid" in no time!

We have a huge impact on the environment.  Using green materials can help contribute to a better quality of life for all.
